Why fiberglass beats concrete, metal, and resin for outdoor commercial projects
Pick the wrong material on a 30-planter rooftop install and you eat the freight surcharge, the crane day, and the warranty call back two years later. Whether you are speccing for commercial lobbies and corporate campuses or outdoor patios, rooftops, and resort decks, here is the math project teams actually run.
| Spec that matters | Hand-laid fiberglass | Concrete | Metal (steel, zinc, corten) | Polyethylene / resin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weight (24" cube, empty) | 15 to 25 lb | 180 to 260 lb | 40 to 90 lb | 10 to 18 lb |
| Rooftop / podium load rating | Yes, routinely specified | Rare, engineering required | Sometimes, varies by gauge | Yes |
| Freeze-thaw stability | Multi-decade, no spalling | Spalls and cracks over 5 to 10 years | Galvanic corrosion at welds and seams | Brittles and cracks in deep cold |
| Salt-spray and coastal use | Resistant, no corrosion path | OK, surface efflorescence common | Pitting and rust unless premium coated | OK, but fades and chalks |
| Custom color match (Pantone, RAL) | Standard service, spray-out approval | Limited, integral color only | Powder coat, fewer colors, longer lead | Stock colors only |
| Repair after dent or scratch | Touch-up kit, field repairable | Not field repairable | Welding or full refinish | Replace |
| Lead time for stock colors | About a week off-peak | 4 to 10 weeks | 3 to 8 weeks | In stock, 1 to 2 weeks |
| Freight class | Low, light, nestable | High, palletized, often LTL freight | Moderate | Low |
The weight math
A 30" concrete planter weighs around 320 lb empty. The fiberglass version of the same size weighs around 40 lb. On a rooftop install, that is the difference between a crane day and a stair-cart day, and the difference between needing structural sign-off and not.
The finish math
Our six-stage finishing process uses professional 2K polyurethane. It is salt-spray resistant and UV-protective. We hold the substrate, primer, base coat, color coat, and clear separately. That is why color is repeatable across a 30-planter install, even across different production runs.
The freight math
Most planter manufacturers cannot quote freight until after you order. We confirm freight in writing before you commit. Nationwide FedEx Freight Direct. COI and blind ship available. The number you sign off on is the number you pay.

Spec it once. Get it right. Move on.
When you are choosing planters for a 30-unit rooftop install, a hotel entry refresh, or a brand-standard rollout across 12 locations, the surprises are what hurt. Color that does not match the rendering. Freight that lands at twice the quote. Lead times that slip past the install date. A crate that opens to a finish you did not sign off on.
Our project team confirms color, dimensions, lead time, and freight in writing before you commit. Custom Pantone and RAL color match is a standard service, not a one-off favor. You see and sign the spray-out sample before we commit color to the planters. Twenty stock colors ship in about a week off-peak. Repeat orders pull the same color recipe so the install in phase three matches the install from phase one, two years later.
No order minimums. Three-year limited warranty. COI and blind ship available on request. We ship to job sites, install crews, staging warehouses, and end-client docks, with appointment delivery confirmed in writing.

Project team FAQ
Are these planters frost rated?
Yes. Our fiberglass construction is freeze-thaw stable. The substrate does not absorb water, so the typical concrete failure mode of water freezing inside the wall and spalling the surface does not apply. Customers leave our planters outdoors year-round in Chicago, Denver, Boston, Minneapolis, and the Pacific Northwest with no winter staging needed.
Standard horticultural caution still applies for the plant itself: any planter holding soil with a root ball can crack the root ball in deep freeze. That is plant biology, not a planter limitation.
How do drainage holes work?
Every planter ships with a pre-drilled drainage hole in the base. If you are using the planter indoors or on a podium deck where drainage to a waterproofing membrane is a concern, request "no drainage hole" at order entry and we ship without the hole drilled.
For commercial outdoor installations we recommend a 1" to 2" gravel base inside the planter to prevent the drainage hole from clogging with root mat over time.
How much does a planter weigh and what is the freight class?
Empty weights vary by size. A 16" square fiberglass planter weighs around 12 to 15 lb. A 28" cube weighs around 35 to 45 lb. A 44" round tree planter weighs around 80 to 95 lb. Compare that to concrete equivalents at five to eight times the weight.
Freight class is low because the parts are light and nest for shipping. Most orders ship nationwide via FedEx Freight Direct. We confirm exact freight cost and transit days in writing before your PO is finalized. COI and blind ship are available on request.
What is the lead time?
About a week off-peak in any of our twenty standard colors, plus transit. Plan two weeks during peak season (May through July). Custom Pantone or RAL match adds about a week for the spray-out approval step. Quick-turn rushes are sometimes possible. Call (888) 381-9501 and ask.
Do you offer custom colors?
Yes. Any Pantone or RAL code, in either Low Gloss or High Gloss. There is a $100 per-color fee that covers the entire matching process plus all spray-out approvals before production. You see and sign off on the actual spray-out sample before we commit color to the planters.
For most commercial projects, the $100 fee pays for itself in the time it saves not having to settle for a near match.
Is there an order minimum or trade program?
No order minimum. Trade pricing is available for designers, landscape architects, GCs, and hospitality groups. Request a trade quote above and the project team will set up trade pricing and confirm volume tiers before you place the order.
How does the warranty work?
Three-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects in materials and finish. If a planter shows a defect in the field, we send a replacement or credit. The fiberglass substrate itself routinely holds up for ten to twenty years in commercial environments, and we have planters in the field from decade-old installs still on the original finish.
Can you ship to a job site, dock, or staging warehouse?
Yes. We ship to job sites, install crews, staging warehouses, and end-client docks. Provide the site contact, hours, and any unload restrictions (lift gate, residential delivery, narrow access) at order entry. We coordinate appointment delivery and confirm in writing.
