How to Arrange Garden Pots

Garden pot arrangements don’t have specific rules—you truly can do what you feel will look best for your outdoor space. The result is a multitude of gorgeous garden pot arrangements, each unique.
If you, too, will soon have to tackle the task of arranging pots in your garden, you’ll be happy to know we decided to gather some of our favorite ideas and combine them into one article.
#1 Use Different Pots
Using pots of different heights, colors, sizes, and textures can effortlessly create a unique display while arranging them from smallest to largest can create an illusion of much more greenery than there actually is.
Ideal pots for it: Any kind, truly. For this specific arrangement, any
outdoor planter or pot should work more than fine - even if they’re a little worn out, that’s no problem as well. In fact, it’s even better, as you’re giving them another chance to shine. Killing two birds with one stone if you ask us.
#2 Use Hanging Baskets
This is a great idea for anyone who doesn’t have that much floor space. Hanging baskets provide anyone coming into your garden with an explosion of color right at eye level while introducing more dimension into your garden.
Ideal pots for it: There are actual hanging baskets available, so you can opt for that. And if you don’t want to pay additional money for pots, you can also use the ones you already have and hang them with cotton or jute rope.
#3 Create a Vertical Garden
Another idea we love for those with limited space - by creating a vertical garden, you can have a few pots while taking the same amount of space only one would. Trailing and hanging plants will work especially well, creating an illusion of a waterfall made from plants.
Ideal pots for it: Every vertical garden is different, so, truthfully, it all comes down to how yours is. In some cases, small round pots will be better, while in others, rectangular planters will be more suitable for the job.
#4 Use Pots as a Staircase Decoration
If you have stairs somewhere in your garden, then including a pot on either side of each of the stairs can be an easy way to add some color and enchanting vibe to them. As for the plants, you can either opt for a monochrome look by picking plants or flowers that are either within the same color scheme or of the same species, or you can go in the opposite direction and choose plants that significantly differ from each other.
Ideal pots for it: For this specific arrangement, we recommend looking for pots that are similar in color to your staircase. Pay attention to the size, too, as if they’re too large, coming down the stairs might be challenging.
#5 Accentuate the Garden Entrance
Another garden pot arrangement we absolutely recommend is placing your pots near the entrance to your garden—the more diverse they are, the better, as they will add depth and visual appeal to the space. You can also extend your garden beyond the entrance by adding the same plants that you have there into the pots, creating a sense of cohesion between the outside and the inside of your garden.
Ideal pots for it: Any pot will work more than fine for this garden arrangement! As mentioned, the more diverse selection, the more fun it will bring to the space.
#6 Use Your Walls
When the floor space is limited, you have to use what you have available - including your walls. How? By creating a so-called ‘living wall.’ It’s very simple - you just have to add some kind of structure or a sturdy net to the wall so that you can have something to attach the planters to. Another option you have is to attach the planters directly to the wall with nails rather than to the structure - while it might leave marks after you take it off, it’s definitely more sturdy.
Ideal pots for it: Here, it’s not really about the size of the plants, but about the material they are made of. Since they’re not just standing, but hanging on the wall, they need to be light enough to not fall off of it. Fiberglass planters might be worth looking into
#7 Add Seasonal Decorations
Garden pot arrangements can involve much more than just pots and plants—take a look at the photo we included. Aside from the obvious, there are also seasonal elements incorporated into the arrangement—the little statue of the bird in the basket on top of chestnuts, along with some pumpkins, truly brings autumn spirit to this arrangement. Whether there’s a new season or a holiday around the corner, you can change the decorations to fit the current calendar!
Ideal pots for it: Again, any garden planter that can withstand weather conditions should be fine for this specific pot arrangement.
