How to Pick Your Planter Like a Pro

Posted by Jason Wyrwicz on Aug 12th 2022

Believe it or not, this isn’t our first rodeo.

After all, we’ve been helping our clients outfit their lives with top-quality planters for the past twenty-five years!

While we’ve consistently delivered high-quality products reflecting trends and tastes for over two decades, we’ll be the first to admit it—it did take some time to be able to find the perfect planter for each of our clients.

But as with everything in life, practice makes perfect. And we’ve had a lot of time to practice.

Today’s your lucky day, though. We’re coming in hot with our time-tested tips to help you pick your perfect planter like the pros.

We’re not overestimating our own skills, of course. Our tips are certainly no substitute for the incredible work our partnering interior designers do. We here at Pots Planters & More simply love our planters, and we love our clients. More than anything, we just wanted to give you a leg-up in finding what you’re looking for to accentuate your space.

Let’s get started with our no-frills, nearly-foolproof strategy that will have you picking out the perfect planter in no time at all.

Step 1: Make a Plan

We know you’re excited about decking out your place with gorgeous new planters, but slow down there, cowpoke!

The key to your planter-based success is to come in with a mapped-out concept, not only of what your planter should look like, but where you’d like to put it, and even what you think you’d like to plant in it! All of these can be major deciding factors in your final planter-pick.

So first, let’s start by taking your most important factors into consideration.

  • Size

Size plays a big part in finding your perfect planter, and many of our other factors come into play here, like Place, Plant Type, and Quantity. We’ll look at those factors soon, but let’s start with your personal preferences.

All of our designs here at Pots Planters & More can be ordered in a variety of sizes. Think about what appeals to you visually. Think about what you’ve seen out and about, both in public and private settings. Do you like the look and feel of a space with bold, enormous planters, or do you prefer a smaller, daintier look?

  • Space

While the size of the planters you choose begins with preference, the space you’re brightening with a planter also plays a big role. What kind of impact do you want to make with your new pot or planter?

Start by determining if you’d like your planter to stay indoors or outdoors. If your planter is outdoors, a tiny pot won’t make a very large difference in its surroundings. Likewise, a planter that’s too large in a smaller apartment, for example, might overwhelm the space.

  • Shape

Here’s where you get to play around a little bit. And boy, do we have options upon options for you to play with.

Think about the majority of the lines and shapes in your home. Does the furniture you already have tend to be more angular, with lots of straight lines? You might want to balance out all of those corners and edges with a round planter. It’s the opposite with a home full of roundness and curves.

Here’s an excellent opportunity to make your planter stand out and to become a conversation piece—or you can just as easily make it blend in by matching your current furniture feel.

  • Aesthetic

Beyond the shape of the furniture that will be around your planter, you also might want to take a good look at your aesthetic. If you’re addicted to the retro aesthetic, you have multiple options to choose from. If you’re more of a “boho” fan, we’ve got you covered, too!

The catalog is your oyster here at Pots Planters & More, but if you truly want the best fit for you, you’ll probably want to stay consistent with the look you’ve already got going on in your space.

  • Quantity (of Planters)

Here’s another important piece of aesthetic information that is crucial for finding your perfect planter: knowing exactly how many planters that you want!

For most of our private clients, the perfect number of planters is between one and three. But if you’re looking to spice up a commercial space of any kind, you’ll most likely be looking for five or more of our planters.

It’s important to know how many planters you’d like, more or less, for three reasons. The first is the most objective and practical: your budget. The second is for measuring out an area to see which designs would look the best at which intervals, and how they should be spaced.

The third is strictly vibe-related. Some of our designs are so cool and funky that too many in one place could be overwhelming.

  • Plant Type

We’ve discussed the identity of shrub vs. flower people on our blog before, but we’ll say it again. What you’d like to put into your planter plays a big part in determining which planter is best!

Though all of our planters are equally cool, some of them are sure to complement their floral (or otherwise) friends better than others.

If you already have a good idea of what you’d like to plant in your pot, it’ll go a long way in helping you find your best planter. This is also important at the ordering stage, because we need to know if you need drainage holes or not!

Step 2: Help Us Help You

And now for the fun part—working with us! (Okay, we might be a little biased.)

Here are our rapid-fire tips for making your experience with Pots Planters & More even better. Use as few or as many of them as you’d like.

  • Think about your top color choices

If you’ve carefully (or even haphazardly) mapped out your idea of the perfect planter, you’ll have thought about your space and your aesthetic. There’s a chance you’ll have started looking at colors, too!

One of our claims to fame is our endless color options. Start thinking about the colors that you’d like to see in your space, and don’t be shy about ordering color samples.

  • Find a reference image.

Are you passionate about interior design? Do you pore over decorating magazines, or did you see a celebrity style that you can’t live without? Bring us a photo! We will do our absolute best to match you with exactly what you can’t stop dreaming about.

  • Be ready to communicate your needs and try to keep an open mind!

We’d love to discuss a variety of different options for your specific needs and tastes. We have the pleasure of knowing our products inside and out, and who knows? We might even introduce you to an earth-shattering style you’d somehow passed over!

  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

We are firm believers in the fact that there are no stupid questions—after all, each of your questions helps you get closer to your perfect planter. Bring them all to us, and if we don’t know the answer off the top of our heads, we’ll be more than happy to put in the legwork.

So, now that you are armed to the teeth with tips, what are you waiting for?
